Commonly Asked Questions
This answers a few commonly asked questions about SOLE's fundraising drive to dig the lake!
When will the dig happen?
We hope to have the project completed over the 2007-2008 winter, although it may happen over the following winter. We need the funds as early in 2007 as possible to reach this goal.
How will we dig that big lake?
Earth-moving equipment will dig the silt from the bottom of the lakebed and deposit it in a nearby field. SOLE has commitments to permit access to the lakebed from the west, meaning there will be little disruption to the park. The silt will be used for construction projects in and around Evansville in the coming years.
Who is involved in this project?
There are a few! SOLE is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has worked tirelessly to save Lake Leota's environment. The City of Evansville has helped with time and resources through the years and will supervise the project. A contractor will be chosen by the City to do the actual work.
Where is Lake Leota?
Lake Leota is in the heart of Evansville, Wisconsin, and is the crown jewel of Leonard Park.
Why bother with all of this?
If we do not remove the silt from the lake bottom, the lake will be gone forever.
What about the Future?
SOLE will continue to work on restoring Allen Creek to minimize further silt deposits, even after the lake is restored.
